We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at

Founded in 1994, Smuttynose is one of the oldest craft brewers in the country, and still among the most consistent. They don’t make the wild and crazy beers that garner a lot of beer geek attention, but in some ways what they do is more laudable: they make a rock solid brew day in and day out. This rye IPA is part of their Short Batch series of one-off, limited run beers, but don’t be surprised to see it return in their regular lineup at some point. Using their IPA as a base, this brew mixes in a generous helping of rye malts and a softer body to create a beer that is both more challenging and more approachable at the same time—no mean feat, that. Gentle rye spice and citrusy hops merge perfectly, creating one of the nicest drinking rye IPAs out there. Give it a whirl at Bar 31.
