The folks at Samuel Adams may have brewed their first IPA back in the 1990s (before most of today’s breweries were open) but they’ve never really been known for the IPA style. (Blistering bitterness and aggressive hopping just hasn’t been part of their resume.) Rebel IPA seeks to rectify that while still holding true the approachability that makes Sam Adams beers the perfect gateway to other beer experiences. Its aroma is piney with touches of citrus. Each sip offers a wash of northwestern IPA character, but in a way that’s dialed back enough to allow everyone (not just hop geeks) to drink it. Toffee and caramel malts balance things out, and the beer is simple, flavorful and approachable. Try it at Kildare’s Manayunk, Flanigan’s Boathouse and Bar-ly Chinatown.
