We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at email@example.com.
Boasting a reputation for being giving and green, this small brewery out of (you guessed it) Maine had already garnered a fiercely loyal following by the time they arrived in Philadelphia. We expect that once people here try their beers, that following will thrive in Philly, too. Mean Old Tom is an oatmeal stout aged on vanilla beans, and it’s yummy. This deep brown beer gives off aromas of cocoa and coffee and soft roast—it’s Earthy and nutty in the nicest of ways—but doesn’t reveal any vanilla in the nose. That’s all in the taste, where the slick vanilla sweetness mingles with chewy oats, dark chocolate, and espresso bitterness in perfect balance. Vanilla beers are often cloying and sweet. Not this one. It’s an ideal enhancement for an excellent stout. See for yourself at Side Car, just be prepared to fall in love.
