The English bitter and ESB (Extra Special Bitter) are staples of pubs across the UK, but aren’t as widely embraced here in the U.S. That’s too bad, because the style is a nearly perfect accompaniment to pub food. They also tend to have only moderate alcohol levels, making them a welcome alternative to the super-boozed-up beers so common in today’s American craft beer landscape. Left Hand Brewing’s take on this venerable style doesn’t stray too far from tradition, with caramel, biscuits, toffee and cereal nicely balanced by bitter, herbal hops. The body is fairly light—lighter than other beers of this style—and the finish is dryer than expected, but both factors only serve to make this beer an easy one to drink. Head down to the Field House, order a plate of chips, and enjoy.
