When you break down the ingredients of beer, it’s pretty much just bread in liquid form, with some bitter hops added to balance out the sweetness. With that in mind, it’s no surprise that wheat, oats, and rye often turn up in beers. Rye in particular has been trending the last couple of years, in no small part thanks to the spicy, peppery kick it can give a beer. This beer is a good example of why people are seeking our rye beers. Brewed at the Jersey Shore, Carton’s Red Rye Returning is an orange-red beer with a healthy amount of piney, aromatic hops. Touches of pear and peach show through, too, but they fight against the burnt caramel and pepper spice of the rye malts.
