PW's Year of Beer: Bell’s Pale Ale

Pale ales are sometimes overlooked despite Sierra Nevada making the style a household name, but they play an important role in providing tasty but drinkable beers to craft lovers. The legendary Bell’s Brewery out of Michigan grabs attention with their popular Two-Hearted Ale and Oberon, but brews like their pale ale satisfy just as much as their better known beers. This pale gold beer has sharp bitterness that is more aggressive than most pale ales. The hop aroma is laden with citrus notes and a vague aroma of, errr, cat piss. Sounds bad, but hop lovers know the scent and know that’s not a negative. In context, it’s actually pleasant. This quaffable brew is not a hoppy enough monster to be a good IPA, but it does make for a lovely, drinkable session pale ale that goes great with a basket of fries. Try it at Capone’s.
