Michigan’s Bell’s Brewery sets aside the winter spice tradition and instead goes for something offbeat but still warming on those long winter nights: a Scotch ale. Bell’s Christmas Ale pours with a huge, fluffy white head that sits atop a mahogany body. The aroma is pure sweetness with nary a hint of the peat smoke common in some Scotch ales: Some grassy hops poke through but don’t overtake it. Sweet and frothy, with touches of molasses, caramel, burnt chestnuts, and just a hint of rye spices, it’s a welcome companion for traditional Christmas snacks. Try it at Irish Pol and Kite & Key.
