We love beer. That's why we're devoting an entire year to discovering (and drinking) cold ones from near and far. Know of a beer worth shouting out? Send us a note at tips@philadelphiaweekly.com.

Anchor’s signature beer, Anchor Steam, is a lager fermented at the warmer temperatures usually associated with ales. Clearly they’re capable of putting together an excellent lager recipe, so it’s rather surprising that a traditional lager only became part of their portfolio in 2012. California Lager is a clear, golden brew with a gentle white head that gives off mild aromas of musky grain and bread. The body is light and the drinking smooth, but prickly carbonation adds a bit of life. There is sweet caramel and toffee candy in the taste, offset by a gentle, appealing bitterness. Something about a fine lager begs for good conversation, so if you’re looking for something to pair this with, consider pairing California Lager with an old friend. Find it on draft at Local 44 and The Industry.
