PW's Year of Beer: The Bruery Tart of Darkness

If you expect a big, roasty stout after being served a glass of this, you can be forgiven for your expectations being off: This beer certainly looks like a rich, robust stout. It’s pitch dark with a fluffy off-white head. The taste, however, is as far removed as can be from the stouts you’re used to imbibing. The aroma is the first clue; tart with faint hints of vinegar, the smell leads into a taste that is candied sourness and somewhat mouth-puckering, like dark fruits and cocoa drenched in lip pursing cherries. Strong oak and leather come into play, and once you get over the sourness, you begin to notice the beautiful roast and chocolate you had been missing. A remarkable beer experience by any measure, you’ve GOT to try this at least once. Do so at Jon’s Bar & Grille and The Pour House Exton.
