Harpoon is in the unenviable position of being considered the other brewery closely associated with Boston, this despite the fact that that other, better known Boston brewery doesn’t actually brew there. No matter. The folks at Harpoon continue to do what they do, namely, creating a growing lineup of rock solid beers. Black Forest is a rich American porter infused with cherry juice and cocoa nibs. Pouring a deep brown with a creamy tan head, the aroma of cherries and chocolate are downright subdued compared to the taste, which is sweet and layered like a rich cake. This beer is full-bodied and thick—fitting, given the flavor profile. It also packs a punch at 9.8 percent ABV, but you’d never be able to tell from the taste.
