The IPA may dominate the American craft beer scene these days, but it’s often its big brother, the Double IPA (aka Imperial IPA), that wins the accolades. With bigger hops, bigger malts, and bigger alcohol, it’s a style of beer best suited for slow, easy indulgence. Arcadia’s take on the style, Hopmouth, is indeed big in all three categories, but manages the trick without veering into aggressive territory. The citrus and pine in the aroma is replaced by dry bitterness in the taste, dominated by sharp pine. The malts suggest sweet biscuits, yet the body is surprisingly light for the style. At 8.1 percent ABV you won’t want to go through a few of these too fast, though, so don’t let that light body fool you. This beer packs a punch.
