Philly Beer Week, the citywide celebration of suds we wait all year for, kicks off May 30! PW is counting down the days with Eric San Juan's daily spotlight of great craft beers everyone should get to know better.
The name suggests something dark and sinister. And make no mistake, this beer is well-named. California’s 21st Amendment is best known for their watermelon wheat beer and hoppy ales, so you’d be forgiven if you did a double-take at the idea of them doing a strong dark Belgian beer—but don’t let that stop you from trying this one. Big, full-bodied and sweet, Monk’s Blood tastes like a murky mix of toasted almonds, rich breads, dark fruits, burnt caramel, and a touch of spice. The liquid is full and rich on your tongue, every swallow a tiny little meal. It’s got a little bit of alcohol heat going down (typical for this style), but that’s OK because you’re going to be sipping this, anyway. Consider pairing Monk’s Blood with a hearty meal at Iron Abbey or The Greek’s Next Door.
