Leave the car at home and walk, bike, roll or take public transportation to one of the most entertaining shows you’re likely to find at this year’s Philly Fringe. Digital Effects, a little gem of a creation from Lucidity Suitcase Intercontinental and Thaddeus Phillips, is created and performed by magician/actor Steve Cuiffo. Cuiffo’s specialty is card tricks and though his sleight of hand is dazzling, Effects is far more than just a magic act. Easygoing and likable, Cuiffo’s well-choreographed prestidigitations feel like hypnotic dances as cards are shuffled and flipped and stories are spun. Involving every audience member in the performance, Effects isn’t only delightfully intimate, but it boasts the basic ingredients of all great theater: magic, and a sense of community. As part of the Off the Grid Festival at the Philly Fringe, the no-frills show is powered entirely by renewable energy. It’s tremendous fun with no carbon footprint.
Through Sept. 19. $15. Painted Bride Art Center, 230 Vine St. 215.413.1318. livearts-fringe.org
