Style deals to help you ring in the New Year.
New Year’s Eve is a bit like Halloween; many of us who exclusively wear T-shirts in day-to-day life enjoy being able to put on a ridiculous amount of eyeliner and something covered in sequins and be a different, sparkly person for a night. (Just ask the Mummers.) However, if sequins and eyeliner are only a once-a-year occasion, you may feel in need of a bit of help, so we’ve rounded up a bunch of Philly salons and boutiques having events and specials on December 31 to help you transform into the glammest person you can be.
The best salon deal is definitely at Chroma Hair Gallery (108 Market St. 215.627.6337. chromahair gallery.com. NYE hours: 11am-9pm) where they’re cheerfully staying open the latest—until 9 p.m. (10 p.m. if you make an appointment)—and serving Champagne and cocktails while you wait. If you get an updo or formal hairstyle ($65), you can get your makeup done at half price (usually $45); and if you elect to have both your hair and makeup done, you get free false eyelash application and a free L’Oreal Professional product (under $15).
The best boutique deal is at Grasshopper (727 Walnut St. 215.925.3959. grasshopperproject.com. NYE hours: 11am-7pm), which always has such ridiculous sales that I sometimes wonder if they got TARP money. If you’re heading someplace fancy but procrastinate a lot, Grasshopper is offering 50 percent off all their dresses on New Year’s Eve only, and they’ve got a lot of extremely cute things to choose from by She-Bible, Purlieu and Grey Ant as well as a good selection of nice warm knits that’ll get you through the next few months of cold-as-balls weather.
Juju Salon & Organics (713 S. Fourth St. 215.238.6080. jujusalon.com. NYE hours: 10am-4pm) which has gotten a lot of press since it became the first all-organic spa and salon in Philadelphia in 2005, is offering 15 percent off makeup application ($65) on New Year’s Eve. The Fabric Row salon is well-known to pregnant and vegan Philadelphians as a place to get beauty treatments and supplies that won’t be a problem for your nostrils, morals or fetus. For makeovers they use NVEY ECO makeup, a shmancy, certified-organic Australian brand that’s not tested on animals. Wine, tea and snacks will also be served.
Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction (116 N. Third St. 215.922.5220. artintheage.com. NYE hours: 11am-6pm) will tempt you into their store with free ROOT cocktails for New Year’s Eve. They’re also taking 20 percent off “host gifts” like whiskey stones, candles and glassware. If the term is unfamiliar, a host gift is something you bring as a thank-you present if you’re over 25 and someone you’re not related to by blood is letting you stay in their guest bed. So if you forsee crashing in your future, be a grownup: Stock up.
Rittenhouse makeup studio Ursula’s About PHace (1700 Sansom St., second fl. 215.557.1562. aboutphace201.com. NYE hours: 10am-6pm) is offering a free eyebrow sculpting session (usually $55) when you get a PHace Lift makeup application ($75) or get airbrushed ($110) on New Year’s Eve. Although the thought of getting airbrushed pre- rather than post-picture may sound somewhat terrifying, you can trust industry vet Ursula Augustine, who’s worked for Chanel, Stila, Bobbi Brown, Aveda and Dior, among others, in her 20 years in the business. Despite what you may be thinking, the unique capitalization and spelling of “PHace” is as much for “pH balance” (for the studio’s natural makeup line) as for “Philly.”
Bus Stop Boutique (750 S. Fourth St. 215.627.2357. busstopboutique.com. NYE hours: 11am-6pm) is taking 15 percent off all party shoes/ankle boots on New Year’s Eve. The shoe boutique, which won a Best-of-Philly 2008 award for women’s shoes after being open for just over a year, has a deceptively vast selection in its small storefront. Owner Elena Brennan, a British import, fills her shop with hard-to-find international brands from Brazil, Mexico, Italy, Israel, Australia, France and, of course, England.
M.A.C. (1427 Walnut St. 215.568.2282. maccosmetics.com. NYE hours: Noon-6pm) will be open New Year’s Eve (but only for walk-ins, since it’s such a high-traffic day), and if there’s a better time to get glammed up in some crazy-ass Ziggy Stardust makeup than New Year’s Eve, I don’t know when it is. M.A.C. does your makeup gratis if you buy $55 worth of product, so while you’re still laying out cash to look like Mariah Carey for one night, if you pay attention you can take the products home and look like Mariah Carey at the DMV, McGlinchey’s, your gynecologist’s waiting room and wherever else you think could stand to be a bit more glittery.
Three Sirens Boutique (134 N. Third St. 215.925.3548. threesirens.com. NYE hours: Noon-5pm) is taking 30 percent off absolutely anything you want to get on New Year’s Eve. The Old City boutique has an admirable selection of night-out dresses and bags by various designers, and even if you already have your outfit picked out for NYE, it may be worth stopping by just for the discount. If you’re going to be wearing tough heels, we love that they carry Footzyrolls, which are little ballet flats that roll up to fit in your purse, then unroll to give you a pain-free walk home after the club. ■
