Fri., June 8, 1pm. Philadelphia Hair Company, 5805 Germantown Ave. 215.842.0550
"I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and I started cutting in my grandpa's basement in Germantown as a kid. I was like 12, 13. I worked at King's Barber Shop, a three-chair barber shop, from '84 to '88, and then I went to Callis, which was a 10-chair barber shop. I opened this in 1990. We have 15 barbers. Platinum Sheers, on the second floor, is a 10-chair beauty salon. I used to do the Eagles' hair--Randall Cunningham, Jerome Brown, Seth Joyner, Clyde Simmons, Reggie White. And I still do a couple of the Eagles, like Correll Buckhalter. I also do Cuttino Mobley, who plays for the Clippers. They fly me out there. I travel and do people's hair--people like Wesley Snipes, Denzel, Bob Johnson. Will Smith, when he did Bad Boys with Martin Lawrence, I was out there for that. I'll be going to the BET Awards. But celebrities and stars, they get fickle. I just decided to stay here. I'm 38, so I don't mind winding down. As far as barbers go, Philly runs things. There's no other city better. The females' hair, we're probably not there. But barbers, I put Philadelphia against any city."
