The Sisters Sirens

Ho-Ho-Ho Saturdays

Christmas arrives early this year, thanks to the lovely ladies at Sisters Nightclub. Philly’s only lesbian bar will be hosting a fabulous holiday extravaganza on each of the three Saturdays leading up to the big day. Best of all, these soirees won’t break your budget or put a crimp in your Yuletide shopping. Admission is free until 10:30 for everyone who prints a copy of the flier off the web, and the boozehounds will appreciate the generous happy hour, which features $2 drinks between 9 and 11 p.m. Unlike Santa, a mean top who punishes naughtiness, revelers are encouraged to get into some mischief. So instead of playing pool or chilling in the ground-floor lounge, make your way upstairs to the dance floor, a friendly space where everyone can get down. That’s also where Sisters Sirens, the club’s own troupe of dancers, will be mixing and mingling with the crowd. These elfin cuties aren’t your typical go-go girls. The group, which does its own choreography and makes its costumes, includes a professional belly dancer, a pole-dance fitness instructor and even a Ph.D. At the stroke of midnight, they’ll put on a holiday-themed number. A Nativity play it ain’t. “It’ll be something that emphasizes sexiness over Christmas,” promises Timaree Schmit, one of the sexy hoofers. Let’s hope that management decorates the establishment with plenty of mistletoe. (Raymond Simon)

Saturdays in Dec. 9pm. Free until 10:30pm (with printed flier). Sisters Nightclub, 1320 Chancellor St. 215.735.0735. sistersnightclub.com

Pleasure Rush 101: After School Special

Pleasure Rush is a privately funded, volunteer-run sex positive education program of the Gay and Lesbian Latino AIDS Education Initiative. Its main focus is reducing risk, creating communication and building communities through open dialogues on sexuality in the context of online and in-person multimedia events. To debut their newest educational video, Pleasure Rush is hosting “Pleasure Rush 101: After School Special.” Pegged as an educational dance party and fundraiser, it’ll feature sex-education stations, a photography booth, dancing and drinks to help facilitate these dialogues in a way that actively links pleasure with health, avoiding the traditional models that emphasize the negative consequences of risky sexual behaviors. Though many of the videos and conversations were initially centered on gay and bisexual men, Pleasure Rush remains committed to promoting an understanding that sex and sexuality are healthy, natural and integral to all LGBTQ communities. Erotic Literary Salon

The latest installment of the Erotic Literary Salon features Sam Benjamin, who’ll read from American Gangbang, a memoir of his sojourn in the porn industry, and two regulars, John and Walter, who’ll discuss the mechanics of masturbation. The diversity of topics is typical for the monthly soiree, which Susana Mayer has beenlovingly nurturing for more than three years. The salon came about quite organically, according to the hostess: It’s the result of both her lifelong love of erotica and her academic research into the wellsprings of women’s sexual desire. The get-togethers initially resembled the famed Parisian salons, where a coterie of authors gathered to share their work, but the event quickly evolved into something larger and more inclusive. It now attracts about 70 people who come to enjoy the frank celebration of sexuality from across the entire Kinsey Scale. Nowadays, attendees are as likely to hear a cellist accompany himself while reading from Rumi as they are to hear an author read from her novel in progress. Equal parts muse and midwife, Mayer’s editorial stance is all-embracing: She neither reviews the work beforehand nor discourages presenters from tackling whatever tickles their fancy. Consequently, the gatherings include everything from coy tales of blushes and bodices to hardcore descriptions of gay bondage. (R.S.)
