Of all summer's activities, few are as thrilling as Penn's Landing's Ice Cream Festival. Why, you ask? Can any number of near-death experiences in the great outdoors compare with the frisson of biting into a painfully cold sugar cone? Can the meat gnawed off backyard barbecue ribs be halfway as fulfilling as a double scoop with sprinkles in a Styrofoam bowl? Can the thundering chords of a metal band's reunion tour rival the aesthetic intensity of chocolate chunks melting on the taste buds? Can a dive into a rippling pool approach the refreshment of devouring a frozen confection? Can the blur of fireworks streaking across the sky match the bounty of colors, the vibrant pinks of strawberry and raspberry ripple, the lush greens of mint chocolate-chip and pistachio? Can the feeling of togetherness when packing in against fellow humankind on the Parkway come close to the experience of rubbing sticky elbows with eager children? I think not.
