Ain't Misbehavin'
Through Dec. $40-$75. Prince Music Theater, 1412 Chestnut St. 215.569.9700. www.princemusictheater.org
After debuting on Broadway with the counterculture musical Hair and winning a 1970 Tony Award for her acclaimed performance in Purlie, Melba Moore was the toast of Manhattan. But then she fell on hard times with two horrendous marriages (including one with Clifton Davis), a trip to the poorhouse, a vicious custody battle and jail. Like countless other celebrities caught in a downward spiral, Moore got religion, and eventually resurrected her career with a star turn in Les Miserables. Renewed, the Grammy-nominated star displays her considerable vocal gifts in the Prince Music Theater's new staging of Ain't Misbehavin'--a silky smooth musical revue co-starring Broadway heavyweights Eugene Fleming and Ken Prymus and featuring 30 tunes composed or recorded by the legendary Fats Waller. Recalling the heyday of the Harlem renaissance, the stylish and soulful show is directed by Richard Parison, who showed his mastery of musical theater with the Prince's electrifying 2005 revival of Dreamgirls and the spectacularly entertaining 2004 sleeper-hit The Big Bang at Act II Playhouse.
