Maybe it’s the diverse share of instruments put together by her backing band, the Deltas, which includes a keyboardist, bassist, drummer and guitarist, plus sax and trombone players. In songs like “Picture Me With You,” there’s a creepy Murder City Devils organ-sounding overture throughout the rapid beats, with Hernandez telling the person to which the song is dedicated: “I’ve been sleeping with your girlfriend,” and, later, “I’ve been sleeping with your boyfriend.”

Of her newest EP, the six-song Demons, Hernandez told Paste magazine, “It’s the perfect soundtrack to drive around on those creepy fall overcast days.” That autumn hymnal gets a little less creepy when she’s performing onstage. There, the energy of such a large live band seems to change the atmosphere from a somber fall ghost story to an action flick that just so happens to haunt you, too.

A mainstay in their Motor City hometown, Hernandez and her Deltas have rarely toured over the last few years but thankfully added some East coast dates to end 2013 on a high note. If you can, catch ‘em up there. / RANDY LOBASSO
