Summer in Philadelphia is a time for overeating, drinking a little too much from that perfectly positioned outdoor table and, by the end of the August, rolling our eyes at the inevitable late-season slide the Phillies are habitually engaged in. (Which, of course, leads to more al fresco drinking: The glass is really half full in the midst of a team implosion.)
But it’s the summertime eating that keeps on getting better, and this year, there are seemingly more standout food festivals than ever before. Hell, even the ones not focused on food per se feature enough great grub to justify a trip, even among the teetotalers in our collective midst.
Start off, of course, with the currently ongoing Philly Beer Week (through Sun., June 8). From brewery tours to tap takeovers, beer is on everyone’s mind over the course of this annual bacchanal, and in true Philadelphia fashion, there’s plenty of great grub to enjoy alongside it. Check out our roundup of can't-miss events and hit up phillybeerweek.org for still more details.
The PECO Multicultural Series at Penn’s Landing will be ringing in the air throughout the summer, with special events featuring the food and culture of Ireland, Portugal, Southeast Asia and more. (delawareriverwaterfront.com)
Manayunk is in on the fun again this year with the Manayunk Arts Festival on Sat. and Sun.., June 21 and 22, right on Main Street. It’s a great chance to buy some art to spruce up your apartment and re-visit the always changing restaurant scene here. Go to manayunk.com for more.
Night Market Philadelphia is back again this year, and it promises to be every bit as delicious as in the past. The restaurants and food trucks will be rolling through West Oak Lane, at 72nd and Ogontz, on Thurs., June 19 and then Lancaster Avenue, at 35th Street, on Thurs., Aug. 21. (Chinatown is the final stop in autumn, on October 2.) Check out thefoodtrust.org for more information.
If you plan on sticking around town for Independence Day, then fill up at Wawa Welcome Americ—specifically on Wed., July 2, for Wawa Hoagie Day. Wawa will be rolling out—or maybe using a crane to airlift—9,000 pounds of hoagies that will fill the bellies of many, many thousands of our friends and neighbors. The gluttony starts at noon and is part of a celebration honoring fire, police and members of the military. Later that night, at 9pm, will be a screening of Rocky at the Art Museum, but I doubt any raw eggs will be served. At least, I hope not. Visit welcomeamerica.com for more, and make sure to specifically seek out information on the justifiably legendary Taste of Philadelphia festivities on Penn’s Landing.
The list goes on: regular shindigs at Eakins Oval, University City Dining Days from July 17-27, and more. Just keep your ears open and your appetite primed: It’s going to be a long, delicious summer here in Philadelphia.
