Snoop Dogg + Wiz Khalifa
Snoop Dogg’s Doggystyle is one of the best hip-hop albums ever. He took the G-Funk aesthetic perfected on Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, which he worked on one year earlier, and translated it into house-party music. Traces of gnarly street violence persisted, but the gangsters partied harder than they gang-banged. While not as harmless as Kid ‘N Play’s schoolboy spunk, Doggystyle significantly shifted away from the tough gangsta grind. Snoop ultimately paved the way for young spitters like Pittsburgh’s Wiz Khalifa, whose Kush & Orange Juice mixtape’s a nod to Doggfather classic “Gin and Juice.” Throw ya muthafuckin’ hands in the air, because two generations of party rappers blaze under one roof tonight. -E.S.
