Neon Indian
It’s no accident that Neon Indian’s first release, 2009’s Psychic Chasms, leads with a track titled “(AM).” The musings of musician Alan Palomo, Neon Indian’s tunes combine the aural nostalgia of AM radio—feel-good, idyllic melodies suited to cross-country drives through the Golden State—with the timely penchant for lo-fi, synth driven tunes. Both Psychic Chasms and last year’s Era Extrana are imbibed with a sunny, carefree nectar well-suited for New Order-influenced electronic pop and preternaturally cheery 8-bit melodies. It’s the ideal soundtrack for a city with a winterless winter and a summery spring—quirky, endearing, and a bit unnerving. -K.S.
