Sometimes during the summer, a weepy relationship movie will open the same weekend as a blockbuster comic book flick. Crazy? No. It’s a strategy known as “counterprogramming.” Such tactics also have a way of popping up in the religious arena. Example: While committed (and more than a few lapsed) Christians gather their families and head off to church for Christmas Eve services, the folks at Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel will host a free klezmer concert from the Ken Ulansey Ensemble. The idea is to give the temple’s congregants something to do while the rest of the world shuts down. But if a klezmer concert sounds way cooler than the alternatives, well, that’s just a side benefit. (Joel Mathis)
