Benjamin Lloyd in A Tuna Christmas.
"I was a troubled preteen in search of a clique. I suddenly discovered this playing characters business works for me. It was like a drug. It was what I had been looking for--a safe way to explore myself. It was an attempt to deal with other things in my life that were troubling, and it dealt with them so perfectly and so completely that for a long time acting was a way for me to compensate for emptiness. In my late 20s and early 30s, I began to understand acting as having ultimately much more to do with the people who are witnessing what I am doing, than it had to do with me. The joy of acting is the connection I feel with the audiences, with other artists, with directors, and playwrights and a sense of common purpose with the wider artistic community. It's an enormous joy for me. Really everything I'm about now is how acting and performance is sort of paradoxically all about me and not about me at all." Through Jan. 3. $30.
