In 2010 Philadelphia becomes a truly fantastic place to live when the 16th Major League Soccer franchise trots out for the first time at its custom-built stadium in Chester, draped in glorious Philadelphia blue and gold. Monday sees dudes in suits officially breaking ground at the stadium site with a goldy-lookin' shovel. And there may well be fireworks and dancing girls and blue-and-gold painted shaved bears on flaming bicycles. But who cares? Because also present will be Philadelphia's real sports heroes--the now 3,500 strong Sons (and daughters) of Ben, the crazy, joyous, all-singing, all-pogoing, witty, irreverent and internationally renown support group that started back when a Philly soccer franchise was nothing more than a pipe dream. "This is important because it's tangible," says SoB founder Bryan James. "It's a real steel and concrete statement that this is actually going to happen." The SoBs are using the event to aid the Help Kick Hunger food drive. So if you really want to feel welcome, wear blue and yellow and bring cans. And be prepared to learn some new songs.
