Anthony Lawton in The Government Inspector
"This play is a comedy that takes place in the mid-1800s. We're only using about five actors to play as many as 12 roles. I'm playing three guys. Two of them are onstage at the same time and they have very similar names, so they just switch hats when one is speaking and the other is not. To get into character I try to see what he desires and find what I have in common with him. What draws me to specific roles is a character that has a very strong desire for something and who's in a very morally ambiguous situation. He's torn between right and wrong and makes a dubious choice about how to solve that problem. I find that's the most exciting role to play. There's a real sense of community and affection among the actors and theater professionals in this town. It's really fun. There's a real sense of communal living in this business." Opens Fri., Nov. 21, 8pm. $20-$50. Through Dec. 28. Lantern Theatre Company, 10th and Ludlow sts. 215.829.0395. www.lanterntheater.org.
