As far back as his star-making turn in The Right Stuff, it was apparent that Ed Harris was going bald. The wisps on top of his head seemed to herald a serious problem: The handsome square-jawed actor would be relegated to character roles without a sexy edge. Somehow, though, Harris defied all expectations, even channeling Clint Eastwood's rene-gade, taciturn allure in Alex Cox's Walker. As William Walker, the leader of a mercenary band that carries out a coup d'etat in 19th-century Nicaragua, Harris resides in a satirical world in which his classically Western stride and soldier-of-fortune agenda is juxtaposed with People magazine and other confusing signs of modernity. Cox, who'd previously directed Repo Man and Sid and Nancy, was trying for a satire of Reagan's foreign policy, but the movie--aside from Harris' performance--was savaged by critics. Interestingly, Criterion recently released Walker on DVD, and though Cox is no Cassavetes, he has become more interesting in hindsight. The DVD includes a featurette about the horrible reviews, and at this showing, local film critic Michael McGonigle will put those reviews--and the violent, satirical tone of the film--into perspective.
