Minimalism. Say it out loud in front of a mirror and you'll want to punch yourself. It makes your face scrunch up like a snooty French maitre d'. Or like one of the many literary critics that vomit it up when they want to describe Amy Hempel without having to think too hard. The word does a disservice to Hempel and gives the impression that her writing is anemic. Sure, her stories are short, but you'll realize when you read them that each of her words carries magnificent weight. And then you'll cry. Or you'll laugh until you can't breathe.
