[SUNDAY, SEPT. 22 ]
At the Eternal Spiral Project's Summer Solo Showcase, Martha Kemper presented her tremendously successful adaptation of Eudora Welty's Why I Live at the P.O. It was a marvelously detailed and emotionally revealing performance that captured both the oppressive nature and considerable charm of a small Mississippi town where a woman abandons her family to live at the neighborhood post office. It was easily the showcase's strongest effort, and now Kemper returns with a further developed version of P.O. and two other Welty stories: Clytie and Where Is the Voice Coming From? Although all three are set in the South, they vary greatly in tone and subject matter. In the Gothic Clytie, we meet a spinster on the brink of madness, while the troubling Where Is the Voice Coming From? offers a unique look at the murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. The three disparate tales should give Kemper a chance to flex her considerable acting muscles, making Why I Live at the P.O. and Other Stories by Eudora Welty an excellent opportunity to catch one of Philadelphia's rising talents.
2pm and 8pm. $12-$15. (Starts Sept. 18.) Second Stage at the Adrienne, 2030 Sansom St. 215.563.4330
