ON THE GUEST LIST

21st Philadelphia Film Festival opening night festivities
Thursday, Oct. 18, Annenberg Center and R2L
Overall vibe: Big-screen glam as Silver Linings Playbook director David O. Russell and author Matthew Quick turned out for a post-screening Q&A in West Philly.
Most memorable moment: The 90-second span of time circa 11:30 p.m. when anyone standing at R2L’s dessert table munching on red velvet cupcakes would have seen an uncanny Kevin Smith lookalike walk past—followed in short order by a Glenn Close lookalike—and finally, Film Office chief Sharon Pinkenson, Meg Ryaning up the joint with sparkly cheer.
Scene stealer: Hey! Was that a PW newspaper box looking all cinematic during a key scene in Silver Linings Playbook? Get outta here! (S.H.S.)

Herman Cain: College Truth Tour 2012
Friday, Oct. 19, Temple University
Overall vibe: Attentive, yet confused. College students in pressed suits and canvas backpacks simultaneously praised and criticized the former Republican presidential candidate as he spoke of his infamous “9-9-9” tax plan, the American dream and Meat Lover’s Pizza.
Most memorable moment: Cain’s less-than-perfect rendition of the “Pokémon” theme song, telling students that when it comes to dreams, “you gotta catch ‘em all.”
Scene stealer: A surprise endorsement of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert that led even the most skeptical to applause. And to his critics, an enthusiastic “Eat your heart out. I does not care!” (Jenine Pilla)

ON THE MENU

Henry Weinhard’s Woodland Pass IPA
From Hood River, Ore., to your local beer store. henryweinhards.com
Here’s the dish: It’s one of three newish offerings from the famed brewery.
Description: This “affordable” and “uncomplicated” IPA is smooth, mild and, well, woodsy. It’s easy on the tongue, but smells like a Busch pounder left out on the beer pong table too long.
Yum or yuck?
Woodland Pass could be more yum than yuck, but the bottle may have been skunked in transit. Buy me a draft, and I’d try it again. (Roland Weary)
