Late Night with Seth Meyers
Weeknights, 12:35am, NBC
Captive audience: SNL fans; talk-show nuts; people who enjoy watching comedians try.
Moment of truth: Now that the smoke has cleared, and he’s had a couple of weeks to settle in, let’s see how the latest, former "Weekend Update" anchor to get a nightly talk show is doing. Unlike his predecessor and current Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon, Meyers appears to be quite natural when it comes to interviewing guests, telling personal anecdotes and just being himself on-camera. But, as his weak monologues and comedy bits have shown, there is a reason why he continues to call the show a work-in-progress. I’d still rather watch him than Fallon, though.
Emmy or phlegmmy: Phl-emmy.

Sundays, 9pm, ABC
Captive audience: The Returned fans; grieving folks; people who like a good cry with their supernatural TV.
Moment of truth: I held off on watching this loose-as-hell, American remake of the French supernatural drama The Returned, which I thought was one of the best TV imports of last year. And just as I suspected, ABC has churned out a maudlin tearjerker the moody original thankfully wasn’t. The core plot is the same: Dead people return to a small town, causing some to rejoice and others to be concerned. This show adds a police procedural vibe by having Omar Epps show up as an immigration agent trying to figure it all out. For a show about death, it’s more histrionic than haunting.
Emmy or phlegmmy: Phlegmmy.

Thursdays, 10pm, Comedy Central
Captive audience: Cringe humor freaks; Eastbound and Down fans; people who just love watching white guys make fools out of themselves.
Moment of truth: Eastbound and Down’s Andy Daly has finally gotten the chance to headline his own show, albeit an Americanized version of a dark-hearted Australian comedy. Daly plays a critic who reviews such life situations as stealing, getting addicted to drugs and even doing a sex tape. Daly certainly goes for making you cringe rather than chuckle, especially in upcoming eps where his reviews start to damage his home life. As much as I like seeing Daly front-and-center in a comedy which fully showcases his dork-with-a-dark-side shtick, the show often leaves me, well, critical.
Emmy or phlegmmy: Phl-emmy.

“Although similar Resurrection is not a remake of the so far much better The Returned - the abc show is based off a book of the same name by Jason Mott.
The Returned was based on the 2004 French film They Came Back.”
