Overall vibe: The hardest working woman in show business brought one of the most impressive stages in recent music history to the City Of Brotherly Love replete with spark-shooting guitars, fire strips and smoke clouds on demand and a trapeze-like apparatus that allowed her to fly over the audience. Oh and of course, she brought herself and her all-female band, which by now should properly be classified among other atmosphere-shifting forces of nature. The 90-percent female audience rose to the moment, costumed in flamboyantly glamourous fashions as though they might be asked to take the stage as well. Most memorable moment: Was it the vibrant performance of “Freakum Dress” or the second stage that placed B in the middle of the arena the better to showcase her enormous star power to the masses or the sheer swagger of her 180-minute performance—#50 on her world tour? We vote for both, as well as the soulful rendition of “Why Don’t You Love Me?” which highlighted her inner 70’s R&B singer, a mode where she truly shines.
Scene stealer: Aside from Les Twins, the gorgeous, Afro’ed twins imported from Paris who have an impressive variety of dance moves, there are Bibi and The Mamas, Beyonce’s too-cool-for-school big-haired guitarist and her plus-size backup singers, whose voices are as bold as their curves. But even they were upstaged by a surprise cameo during the show’s finale from Mr. Carter, who ran out and hugged a genuinely surprised Mrs. Carter, then ran off.
