Marked by razor-sharp writing and an almost insane attention to details, ManiPedi’s particular brand of humor often teeters freely between dark and silly.
Shannon: I think that would just piss my mom off.
Kaitlin: I have a really supportive mom as long as she doesn’t know what I’m doing. She just knows that I’m busy doing something that’s not stealing cars.
Shannon: Kait had to move into the shed once she started doing comedy.
Kaitlin: No, it’s because I didn’t put the dishes in the dishwasher right.
On why people should bother going out to see live comedy:
Kaitlin: Because it’s cheap, and it’s BYOB, asshole.
Aubrie: There’s so much live art and theater going on in the city, and comedy is probably, like, your cheapest option. And if you see something you don’t like, be willing to give it another shot.
Madonna: Get off the Internet.
Kaitlin: Yeah, live comedy is definitely its own thing. If you see a bad Internet video, you’re not going to be like, “I’m done with you, Internet!”
Briana: Who doesn’t like comedy? Think about any 18-year-old freshman in college who’s passing a “J” around—what are they watching? They’re watching shit on YouTube; they’re watching the fucking Daily Show. People are hooked into comedy in a way that they weren’t 20 years ago. It’s all around them. So get them away from the screens, and get them in front of live comedy.
On competing in Underdogs’ “Underdog Challenge,” eating all 22 varieties of hot dogs so that ManiPedi can get its name on the wall (10 down, 12 to go):
Madonna: That’s how we’re going to get the hot-dog loving guys.
P.S. When Madonna gets really drunk, she loses feeling in her hands and feet. That’s why the group is called ManiPedi. Aubrie is concerned Madonna may be suffering from some form of nerve damage and really thinks she should get this checked out.
ManiPedi will perform at the Philly Improv Theater on Nov. 30, the monthly Polygon show at L’Etage on Dec. 11, and as part of Secret Pants Christmas Show at Johnny Brenda’s on Dec. 23. All upcoming show info can be found at manipedisketch.com.
