Marked by razor-sharp writing and an almost insane attention to details, ManiPedi’s particular brand of humor often teeters freely between dark and silly.
Shannon: Kate being Sporty Spice.
Kaitlin: Fuck right off! I’m not Sporty Spice!
Shannon: You’re obviously Sporty Spice. Brianna is Scary Spice.
On the je ne sais quoi of Philly humor:
Madonna: One thing that I love about sketch groups in Philly is that we strive to be unlike anybody else.
Briana: There’s a different flavor. I think there’s a higher level of absurdity in Philly. People are batshit crazy, and you can tell—in a really great way.
Madonna: There’s a weirdness to Philly that is not like any other city. For example, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Kaitlin: I like that underdog feeling that Philadelphia has. I pity the douche that comes up to ManiPedi and starts talking shit on the Philly comedy scene. Like, I really do.
On observing people for inspiration:
Madonna: If I’m sitting in Rittenhouse Square, there’s way too many people to watch. I feel like I need to be in a more intimate, coffee-house setting where I can really fucking watch someone. Like, really stalk the shit out of them.
Shannon: Madonna has drilled dozens of peepholes through walls all over the city.
Madonna: There’s a really good one at the Starbucks at 15th and Walnut. Check it out.
Kaitlin: I base my characters more on someone I know than just someone I’d see on the street because I can flesh it out easier. And as a lazy person, that’s helpful.
Briana: I come up with a lot of ideas when smoking, showering and walking.
Shannon: She’s always doing one of those things.
Madonna: Or all of them.
Briana: At the same time.
Kaitlin: Walking around, smoking in her shower.
