The importance of being earnest: The Straight Rainbow kids are over iron-on

“The Kids Are Uptight”

Sat., May 10, 4-8pm. Free. Gallery One, Hamilton Hall, University of the Arts, 320 S. Broad St. 215.717.6030. www.strtrnbw.blogspot.com

Remember when Michael Stipe wore like nine T-shirts with earnest messages on them in one awards show? There’s something just as exhausting about the parade of post-PC Ts from Threadless, Busted and Urban O. It was ironic to “Vote for Pedro” five years ago, but now it’s just lame. A group of Philly artists is bringing sincerity back to T-shirts. Organized by two UArts M.F.A. kids with submissions from all over, “The Kids Are Uptight” is both an exhibition and one-day sale of hand-dyed, screen-printed, way limited-edition T-shirts featuring quasi-political slogans and designs inspired by local issues. Instead of telling the world that “Your Retarded,” show ’em how you feel about casino construction, bike lanes and smoking in bars (that’s anti, pro, anti). A portion of proceeds goes to the Red Cross. (Caralyn Green)
