Why: Tina Fey is like a live-action Lucy from Peanuts—or a real-life Veronica from Archie, with Amy Poehler as Betty. Reinstalled at SNL, she reclaims her inner Heather, freed from her 30 Rock need to be Mary Tyler Moore. Best of all, she makes it personal and political, trying to bring around the cool kids to Hillary before it’s too late, with the inspired rallying cry: “Bitches get stuff done!” Proving her own point, she gives the show back the partisan political bite on which it’s always thrived.

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantánamo Bay Trailer

What: Preview of April comedy sequel.

Why: You know times have changed when a movie can joke about terrorism, immigration, interrogation and airport security without a firestorm of condemnation (other than a New York Times thumbsucker on the Guantánamo detention camp as “an idea in worldwide culture”). Here, our White Castle friends get mistaken for “terrorizers” (as the George Bush character calls them) and play their classic uptight/laidback routine, complete with the return of a burping Neil Patrick Harris and a happy quota of racial and political jokes.

Home for Life

What: Classic old-age home documentary.

Why: Who knew nursing homes were like high school? “They made me feel so bad that I cried for two days,” says 82-year-old Bertha Weinberg after some elderly mean girls make fun of her. That’s one of the lessons of this anthropological 1968 look at a Chicago home, which sticks close to its subjects like a real-life Away From Her (without Julie Christie’s glamour). Cast out of her son’s house by his perfectionist wife, Bertha’s the poignant heart of the movie, struggling to make the best of her environment, like an awkward new girl on the first day of class.
