THREE SWEET PICKS TO GET YOU THROUGH THE WEEK

by Leo Charney

Grey’s Anatomy, Season Three
DVD
What: Hospital drama’s most recent season.
Why: Recipe for shark-jumping: Break up your old couples, then add new ones; kill off your old characters, then add new ones; suggest your heroine’s suicidal, then never follow up. But a good serial just keeps on going, and Grey’s hiccups don’t derail its momentum. The increasingly bad writing becomes part of the ride, and the Dickensian web of characters and plots feels even more intricate on DVD. Above all, the on-target acting (especially Kate Burton’s Shakespearean mad scenes) never fails the characters, even when the writers do. headline: The Pick-up Artist

Online: VH1.com
What: The eight most painful minutes on the Internet.
Why: “I had the kiss close there, but I didn’t pull the trigger.” That’s how reality-show contestant Joe describes his pathetic failure to kiss a girl in a bar who is, in the words of the show’s judges, “so into him right now.” He’s just one of the nerdy pupils of pickup master “Mystery,” who tries in vain to give his guys some game. Go to the “In the Club” segment of episode four, and watch these dudes flame out or chicken out, while using Mystery’s arcane jargon, which includes “IOD,” “IOI,” “dead set” and “kiss close.” headline: Tell Me You Love Me

On Demand: HBO
What: New cable relationship series.
Why: Remember Thirtysomething, the ’80s TV drama about malaise among the white and straight? It’s back! At least in spirit, with HBO’s new show about three affluent couples—two parents who never have sex, two non-parents who can’t get pregnant and a hot engaged couple who fight about fidelity. For good measure, you get 67-year-old Jane Alexander as the marriage therapist giving her husband a blow job. It’s like Red Shoe Diaries directed by John Cassavetes, mixing explicit sex with the angsty emotions of an indie movie.
