Eat Beat

by Kirsten Henri

Eat It!
You must eat corned beef on St. Patrick’s Day. Why? Why would you eat it any other day? A little-known fact: No one is quite sure who invented the seasoned and brined beef brisket—the Irish or the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. We suggest offering a word of beefy thanks to both your Irish and Jewish ancestors before you eat (even if you have neither). >> Places to eat it Irish: Fadó, 1500 Locust St. 215.893.9700. www.fadoirishpub.com; Kildare’s, 509 S. Second St. 215.574.2995. www.kildarespub.com. Places to eat it Jewish: Famous 4th St. Delicatessen, 700 S. Fourth St. 215.922.3274; Hershel’s East Side Deli, Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch sts. 215.922.6220. www.readingterminalmarket.org

Sip It!
Whiskey. The Irish kind. Bushmills, Jameson’s or Tullamore Dew. In Southwark, a bar for grownups. That’s all. >> Southwark, 701 S. Fourth St. 215.238.1888

Buy It!
Beer and cheese, beer and chocolate, beer and more beer. Is it heaven? No, it’s the third annual Brewer’s Plate, a local food and beer event hosted by the White Dog Foundation. Eighteen Philly restaurants, including newbies like James, will prepare two dishes to pair with a particular beer from local craft brewers like Troegs and Flying Fish. The Dog has upped the ante this year: In addition to beer, there’ll be organic sodas from Steaz and gin from Northeast Philadelphia’s Bluecoat. The VIP lounge has also gotten a deluxe makeover, with reserve beers personally poured by the brewmasters of Victory, Stoudt’s and Dogfish Head, cheese from Di Bruno’s and select brews paired with gorgeous local chocolates from John & Kira’s. The event usually sells out, so get your tickets online now. >> Sun., April 1, 5-8pm. $50-$100. Reading Terminal Market, 12th and Arch sts. 215.386.5211. www.whitedogcafefoundation.com

Donate It!
“It’s going to be a wildly fun party,” says Lynn Buono, chief culinary officer of Feast Your Eyes (FYE) catering, about their next Salon Dinner. With Bollywood dancers and henna artists attending this Indian banquet, the dinner series began as a nod to the tradition of French salons, but the true purpose is to donate the evening’s proceeds to a worthy cause. The Indian feast benefits the arts nonprofit InLiquid. Instead of a tip, bring a $20 check made out to InLiquid. >> Fri., March 23, 6-10pm. $65, reservations required. Feast Your Eyes, 914 N. Second St. 215.923.9449. www.inliquid.com
