This year, everything is different, and it all starts with a welcome name change: from PIGLFF to QFest—the Q standing in, of course, for queer. White gay men? You’re still welcome. But black lesbians, Jewish transmen, Buddhist intersexuals, straight grandmothers, people who don’t know what the hell they’re feeling—you’re all welcome too.

The Iraq war movie machine, much like the war itself, hasn’t been going swimmingly. The movies, earnest and ham-fisted in a way that would shame even Stanley Kramer, have stunk and bombed, all while genre films that brutally comment on the Bush II era (The Bourne Ultimatum, Manderlay, various zombie movies) have succeeded.

The less-is-more approach paid off in productions ranging from the Wilma’s powerful staging of the epic Scorched to Theatre Exile’s thoughtful exploration of pedophilia in the stunning Blackbird.
